Dr Hj Kamaruddin DSP Hj Talib, the President of DPPMB and the National Chamber of Commerce and Industry Brunei Darussalam opened the lunch event with welcome remarks on DPPMB’s history and how this event is intended to bring together the Brunei business community, provide access to info on market and personal perspectives from two featured Brunei businesses who have pivoted personally as well as professionally whilst still maintaining their core strengths.

HE Ambassador Motohiko Kato from the Embassy of Japan, provided an insight on the global economy from Japan’s perspective and the impact on the Japan’s economic development where he highlighted Japan’s prioritised industry and the development of trade and investment activities in Japan and Brunei Darussalam. He further elaborated on Japan’s FDI interest in Brunei and how this would benefit Brunei’s businesses.

Two Malay entrepreneurs - Soffian Umar of L’Etoile Management Services and Musa Adnin of Adinin Group, presented business stories from a personal perspective. Both speakers gave a compelling story of how they started, the challenges they encountered and how they were able to pivot and still stay true to their core strengths. Soffian spoke of his corporate experience working in the oil and gas industry, and how he undertook to start a business that focused on his skills and knowledge. Hj Musa spoke of his dreams of going abroad for further studies and when financially he was not able to pursue this dream, he was given the opportunity to join his father on an entrepreneurial journey - to start a business that served the oil and gas industry. Lower oil prices then brought on challenging times and this was where Musa Adnin diversified his business to real estate development and agriculture (fisheries). Soffian was also able to leverage on his corporate experience and help train other businesses to improve on their capabilities. Musa Adnin stressed on two key messages: being humble, finding the right mentor that can help you develop and keep you focused.

Over one hundred participation from the business community that included representatives of chambers and business associations, as well as representatives of lead government agencies and foreign missions based in Brunei Darussalam, attended the event.
