Dr. Hj Kamaruddin DSP Hj Talib

Dr Hj Kamaruddin DSP Hj Talib is the Executive Director of K&H Remittance Services, a financing remittance and general trading service company for Overseas Workers and the Director of ABMS Co Sdn Bhd, a Building Maintenance (Electrical, Mechanical and Janitorial) service company. He is also the Chairman of Bureau Veritas, an accredition company and third party inspectors for marine survey and building materials and health hazard specifically on food inspection (HACCP) and Quality, Health, Safety and Environment; Aryaduta Sdn Bhd, a Trading & Construction company; and KP Mineral & Chemical (B) Sdn Bhd, a supply chemical company for water treatment plants.

Dr Hj Kamaruddin started his career in the public sector in 1976 where he was a senior officer in the Department of Security and Intelligence and the Politcial Research Anaysis Department, Ministry Of Foreign Affairs and Trade. The latter was the foundation for the current Brunei Research Department. After 14 years in the public sector, he embarked on an entrepreneurial pursuiit that led to the formation of pioneer companies that are active in the leading service industries of remittance, industry standards, building maintenance and other support services in the construction space.

He has acquired over 20 years of experience in the management of diverse projects, and an understanding of how business is conducted in Brunei Darussalm. This has led to his active involvment in the sustainable development of MSMEs where he is the current President of Brunei Malay Chambers of Commerce and Industry and the National Chambers of Commerce and Industry Brunei Darussalam (2015-todate). By the consent of His Majesty the Sultan of Brunei Darussalam, he was appointed by the Energy and Industry Department (previously under the Prime Ministers Office) as a member of the Board of Directors for DARe, an agency committed toward the sustainable development of MSMEs. As a representative of the private sector, he is also a members of Peneraju Strategi Ekonomi for non-oil and gas sector, trade and macro.

He has been awarded P.S.B (The Most Blessed Order of Setia Negara Brunei 4th Class) by His Majesty, the Sultan of Brunei Darussalam (2006-2007), the first Bruneian for 'The Order of National De Merit" by the French Government (2003) and the Honourary title "Datu Seri Maharadja Shahbandar by the Philippines Sultan of Sulu (2004). The latter is in recognition for his role as Chairman of BIMP-EAGA Business Council Brunei Chapter, promoting Cultural and Student exchange program between Mindanao and Brunei Darussalam.

He has been very active in the development of youth through sports such as football and the establishment of rugby as a recognised sport in Brunei Darussalam. As a martial art expert in Karate and Tae Kwon Do, he has also competed and represented Brunei Darussalam in regional competitions such as the SEA Games.

Business Report Presented by Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali (UNISSA)

Dr Hajah Rose Abdullah
Director of Centre for Research and Publication, Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali

A Senior Lecturer at the Faculty of Islamic Economics and Finance and graduated from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) in Economics, MBA from Heriot-Watt University, UK, Masters in Islamic Banking and Finance, UBD and PhD in Islamic Civilization from UKM focusing on Microfinance and Waqf.

She has over 30 years of teaching experience since 1987. Her early working experience was with the Marketing Unit, Department of Agriculture for three years (1987 – 1990) and as well teaching on part time basis (1987-1990). In 1990 she taught the Brunei National Diploma in Agriculture for eight years as a full-time lecturer and was at the same time a training coordinator for SMEs with the Resource Centre, Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources (1990 – 1998). She worked for over twelve years as a Senior Lecturer at the Institut Teknologi Brunei (1998 – 2010). She joint UNISSA in January 2011 until now.

She teaches several subjects such as Money and Banking, Transactions in Islamic Banking and Finance, Islamic Financial Systems, Islamic Banking and Financial Services, Entrepreneurship, Corporate Entrepreneurship, Islamic Investment and Capital Market, Accounting and Auditing for Islamic Financial Institutions. Currently, she is active in research and publications in the area of Islamic Economics and Finance, Waqf, Zakat, Microfinance, Micro and Small Enterprises, Poverty, and management.

Economy Report Presented by University Brunei Darussalam (UBD)

Dr. Yazid Abubakar Abdullahi, PhD, FHEA, FIEEP, SEDA


Dr. Abdullahi is a Senior Assistant Professor of Entrepreneurship and Incubator Coordinator at Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD). Prior to joining UBD, he was a Senior Lecturer in Entrepreneurship & Innovation at Kingston Business School (AACSB, EPAS and AMBA accredited), Kingston University London, UK, where he successfully led the creation of the first MSc in Innovation Management and Entrepreneurship. He was the Programme Director for the MSc in Innovation Management and Entrepreneurship at Kingston Business School. He was also a Lecturer in Entrepreneurship and Economic Development at the University of Essex, UK (which is one of UK’s Top 10 Social Science Research universities), and Program Director for BSc Business and Service Industry Management. So far, he has taught a total of up to 25 Modules at the University of Essex/Kingston UBD (including Kingston Moscow MBA) combined, most of which relate to entrepreneurship and innovation both at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Dr. Abdullahi holds a PhD in Entrepreneurship (University of Essex, UK) and MSc in Entrepreneurship and Business Management (University of Bedfordshire,UK).

Dr. Abdullahi has published in many peer-reviewed journals, a number of which are recognized and listed in the highly-respected Association of Business School (ABS) ranking, published book and presented peer-reviewed papers in up to 26 conferences (many of which are leading conferences) around the world, including: USA, South Korea, Canada, Colombia, England, Scotland, Wales, Republic of Ireland, Belgium, India, Bahrain, Hungary, Turkey, Latvia, South-Africa, Malaysia, Dubai etc.

He is a Fellow of the International Entrepreneurship Education Programme (IEEP), National Centre for Entrepreneurship in Education (NCEE), UK. He is also a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA), UK. Dr. Abdullahi also holds Staff Educational Development Association (SEDA) Award in Leading and Developing Academic Practice, UK. He is also an Associate member of the prominent Small Business Research Centre (SBRC) at Kingston University London, which is one of the leading centres for small business research in Europe. Dr. Abdullahi serves as a Member of the Advisory Board of Globe Management Institute (GMI), Ghana. He has held memberships of Brown International Advanced Research Institute (BIARI) Network on Technology Entrepreneurship and Management Institute, Brown University, USA (2010), Institute of Small Business and Entrepreneurship (ISBE), UK (2008), European Council for Small Business and Entrepreneurship (ECSB) (2007) and Nigerian Institute of Management (NIM) (2002). Dr. Abdullahi has also worked on a number of funded projects, such as the British Council ‘Women Empowerment Project’ (£45,000), ‘Education Partnership for Africa’ (EPA) (£60,000), ‘Economic Impact of Southend Airport on the Local Economy’ (£19,000), ‘Regional Disparity in Entrepreneurial Behavior and Activities’ (£3,400) etc. Others include projects for Qatar Development Bank, East of England Development Agency (EEDA), European Union (EU) - Leonardo Da Vinci Vocational Training Action Programme, among others.

Technology Report Presented by University Technology Brunei (UTB)

Dr Hajah Noor Maya Haji Md Salleh
Assistant Vice chancellor (Academic), University Technology Brunei


A Senior Assistant Professor and graduated from UBD in Public Policy and Administration, Masters in Training and HRD from Warwick University (UK) and PhD in Management focusing on Organization change and Emotional Intelligence from University of Southampton (UK).

She has over 23 years of teaching experience at UTB in Change Management, Managerial Decision Making, Leadership, Human Capital Management, Principle of Management, Public Administration, Research Methodology, Professional Business Skills, People and Organization, Business Statistics, Engineering Management, Public Service Management, and Human Resource Management. Besides UTB she also has experienced in teaching Management at MTSSR (ND and PND Level) in 1997, and Human Resource Management for MBA programme and MBA for Executive at the University of Southampton (UK) in 2007.
Prior to joining UTB, she worked as Executive Marketing Officer at Tanco Resort, a Malaysian company based in Brunei.

She has acquired Chartered of Institute of Personnel Development (CIPD) in 2008 and has been involved in training on Human Resource Management at ILIA for V Sigma for both government Middle Officers and Senior Executive Development Programme in 2009 and 2010. She had conducted training on Emotional Intelligence to 72 executive managers at Southampton University, and to 40 former IBB and IDBB middle and lower management officers in 2007. She has co-facilitated 7 series Change Management Workshop for academic and support staff of UTB (at that time ITB), conducting Leadership course for Brunei Police Force for newly promoted officers in 2017 and facilitating Internal Branding for 80 participants (4 groups) for Cottage Industry Training progarmme for Ministry of Home Affairs in 2016 and 2017. She has presented her paper on Emotional Intelligence, HRD, organization change, M&A, curriculum development and country report at events held both locally and abroad including United Kingdom, Hungary, the Philippines, South Korea, France, Thailand, and Indonesia.

Haji Ibrahim HM Ali

Hj Ibrahim HM Ali is the Executive Chairman BN Hartajati Real Estate Developer. At the moment the company is developing several houses and commercial building at various location. For further details, log in to bn.com.bn. As a chartered engineer he is also a member of Brunei Darussalam Association of Engineer, Architect and Surveyor in short PUJA. He is now actively involved in steel supply, brick and cement supply. He is also seeking foreign partnership in real estate, steel supply and brick manufacturing.

HAJI IBRAHIM HM ALI started his career as a civil engineer at Public Works Department. He served as director at Housing Development Department, Civil Service Institure, Ports Departments. He was a deputy permanent secertary at Prime Minister Office, and retired as CEO of Authorrity for Industry of Telecommunication and Information (AITI) in 2008.

HAJI IBRAHIM HM ALI was responsible in privatisation of Telecommunication Department, setting up of the AITI as a regulator, privatisation of Muara Container Terminal, intial development of Pulau Muara Besar (PMB), organising executive training for future leaders in the civil service, in which this training has been run for more than 25 years, chairman of MOC Strategic Planning Committee.

HAJI IBRAHIM HM ALI has been active supporting DPPMB on matters pertaining to developemnt of Malay entrepreneur. He had chaired several meetings and represent DPPMB at various important events such as DPPMB World Café, Hard Talks and Vision Brunei 2035.
